Gun laws and politics

  1. Hi Scottie;
    My parents are visiting this weekend. Dad, being a republican and a gun owner, seemed a great source of insight to the whole understanding of how a gun owner views the ownership and/or ban of assault type weapons. One of the things that stand out the most in all arguments for assault weapon ownership is fear.
    I hear “Hitler first took all the guns and if we lose our right to own any type of gun then the American government will do the same as the German government of the ’30’s”. And, “if we lose our right to own any type of gun then we will be invaded by other countries and taken over”, like a real world “Red Dawn”, I guess. And, “If we don’t have guns, then only bad guys will have guns and come shoot me in my sleep”….. I guess my home is in a war zone or something.
    The end result of all arguments is “I need my gun to feel protected and safe, and if some people use their guns to kill then that’s not my fault”. Fear. And, in the end, all I can feel is sadness. To live in a world stifled by the necessity of owning multiple weapons to feel safe from imagined and real threats is a very sad thing.

    • Hello Randy. It is sad. The argument that if we ban some types of guns and make sure some people can’t use them.. then only criminals will have guns makes me ask why we have any laws at all then. Speeding laws are routinely broken.. yet we don’t throw out those laws. They keep trying to pass laws against abortion, why if laws don’t make a difference. I also take issue with the fact that residents are going to be needed if we are ..”invaded”.. I suspect we have a military for that. This is not the 1700″s. Besides look how wars are fought now.. they are going to launch missiles and smart bombs, no ar-15 or shotgun is going to stop that. Lastly hitler did not ban guns, in fact it was just the opposite, he wanted everyone to have them to fight for the fatherland. As far as joe play army civilian, he is not going to stand up against the military. Nice fantasy, we all want to be chuck norris but It don’t work that way. Look I can dream I can run, but lately I can’t hardly walk.

      I feel for you brother. I hope they hear you some how. The idea that the democrats were trying to do is simple, some people are felt dangerous and so those people don’t get to fly.. all the bill said was if you are on the no fly list, no get a gun! Hey seems pretty good to me. IF you are too scary to be let on a plane, we should you be given a mass killing device. Now if they want a musket, or one shot gun, could be different, I bet the death toll at Pulse in Orlando would have been a lot less if after each shot the gunman had to repower and reload. Or if he had only a knife or a pipe. He may have got a couple but never fifty. Be well and happy. Hugs
