Learning is grand

Filed under: My Life and Rants — Scottie @ 03:22

I just learned something I never knew.  I do not have a great education and grammar was always hard for me.  I was greatly helped when spell check was introduced not as a special feature but as a standard for everything.  Of course in the case of spell check it helps to know which one of the choices to pick.  Hey that is not an easy thing if you can’t spell in the first place.  🙂

I have always used the three dots… to mean an interruption in my thought or speech…a pause like a comma only longer.  I did this to better organize my thoughts or to give my readers time to absorb what I was writing.   This is wrong grammatically.

This thing with three dots has a name.  It is called an ellipsis.

I will post what it really is at the end of this post as the link I got it from is a bitch to deal with.

So while I was trying to do one thing , create a space for thought, what I really was doing was implying I was leaving out words or ideas.   Something totally different than I wanted to show.   When I think how I have used it in both my own writings and in the comments I have left on others blogs.. I must have sounded like a complete deranged idiot.

Here is the definition I got off the web.

el·lip·sis
iˈlipsis/
noun
  1. the omission from speech or writing of a word or words that are superfluous or able to be understood from contextual clues.
    • a set of dots indicating an ellipsis.
sorry for the confusion.   Scottie   Many hugs.

  1. On occasion, we all need a bit more time to … organise organize…. dammit! Sort out our thought processes.

  2. I use it that way, too. I think if you use it as a pause you must connect the two words, or I think I read that! As in…don’t use a space … Or it’s a whole new sentence!
