  1. Well said. People need to mind their own business.

  2. Good point about McVeigh. It’s been said that when a white person screws up, it starts a conversation about screwing up, but when a black person screws up, it starts a conversation about black people. Only minorities, not the dominant group, are judged by the actions of a single member of the group.

It was also funny when you compared racist fantasies about Hispanic migrants with the Vikings. For most of history northern Europeans were regarded as barbarians by the civilized societies around the Mediterranean — even as inferior — and given the relative levels of achievement at the time, frankly it was understandable. The Romans considered the Germanic tribes to be dangerous barbarians to be kept at bay by a fortified border. In the Middle Ages, the highly civilized Persians and Arabs looked upon places like England and Germany as savage countries incapable of real culture. They were wrong, of course, as the achievements of the last few centuries show, but the dominance of what the Nazi types think of as “Aryans” (a word whose real history they hardly know) is an anomaly of the last few centuries. Northern European civilization is dependent on the Roman alphabet, Arabic numerals (actually from India) and Middle Eastern mathematics, and Greek and Latin words to express intellectual concepts. There is no pure culture.

The high levels of intermarriage among racial groups in the US are what will probably resolve this issue eventually. I’ve always thought that the real problem is people who think of races as fixed, immutable blocs of people. In reality those categories are constantly blurring into each other, and the trend is escalating. In the late nineteenth century racists were panicking about the influx of people like the Irish and Italians. Now their descendants are considered as “white” as anybody. It’s a shift in perception as people assimilated, and it will continue.

    • Thank you for the great comment. I had not known about the different groups you mentioned and how they perceive each other. I do remember hearing someone saying that in the past the Irish were not thought of as white. I agree that intermixing is a good thing and will be a big factor in solving the problem. I think kids who intermix, who have friends of different backgrounds and ethnic groups will find it hard to hate the people they hang out with. I think isolation and misunderstanding bring some of the most virulent hate we have today. look at gay people, they began to gain real acceptance when people learned their kids were gay, their doctors, their friends, their neighbors. I should have also said that the new administration will only call someone a terrorist if they are not white. No white shooter has been designated a terrorist in this administration. If I remember correctly did they not stop a program at the DOJ because it included white people also as potential threats? Hugs

  4. That rant was spot on. You raised a ton of great points especially with race being a social construct. Sure, people have varying levels of melanin and there are certainly different ethnic groups and/or nationalities, but we’re all human. I appreciate you doing your best to open people’s eyes when it comes to racism and bigotry.
