  1. Isn’t the idea that they are accountable to the voter? Of course human nature is so subtle it has always used propaganda techniques to jump the hurdle of accountability , besides which voters are busy getting on with their own lives. In the UK when the election approaches parliament takes a sudden interest in what it pompasely calls ‘ The British People ‘ as if we are some noble unified group it always gives me a sick feeling in the stomach. I hear such ludicrous statements like ‘ the British People have spoken ‘ chanted continually by men and women who are bent on re-election.

    • Sadly the republicans have spent decades rigging the election system so it makes it really hard to vote them out. They have gerrymander the districts to make it so democrats have to have 3/4 more voters than any republican just to break even. Add to that the attempts to restrict voters and voting places where a majority of democrat voters are likely to vote. So no the republicans are only accountable to their wealthy donors. Hugs

  2. I investigated gerrymandering a little and found this account in the New York Times.
‘ Gerrymandering by the party in office is almost as old as the republic. Across the generations , Democrats and Republicans alike have exercised this power vigorously when they have been in charge. Over the last two or three decades Republicans have turbocharged the process in some states where they have total political control.
Judge Niemeyer was appointed by George Bush and he said : both major parties denounce gerrymandering when done by the other side yet pursue the practice themselves. ‘
How subtle human nature is in the battle to win at any cost we now have disabled sports men and women exaggerating their disabilities to get those coveted medals. Healthy sportsmen taking medication to slip under the ban and improve their performance .

    • Yes both sides did some. However gerrymandering changed completely around 2010 when the republicans started to use computer data to track not only the voters party, but all other factors in voting such as male, female population, skin color and ethnic groups, and even education levels. They got it right down to a science that they could either dilute a groups impact and maximize their parties gain. They really made it so that some areas can be won only by the republican party because it is not possible to get enough votes in other districts to over ride the gerrymandering in favor of the republicans. 3. Your answer really made me think ( something I’m not too used to doing ) it reminded me that now the London stock exchange is run by computer programs that can think in microseconds. Either the Republicans have some mighty smart members or the money to hire some mighty smart programmers but anyway what sort of moral character must these programmers have ?
The other thing that crossed my mind is progress is forced upon us or we will be side-lined and maybe even go extinct like the dinosaurs.
Keep up or drop out could become keep up or starve. It throws voting into a new light just as the manipulation of opinion using the internet throws human decision making into question. Who knows where the world is going or who is controlling it?
