Catholic Archbishop: If Your Religion Contradicts the Law, Ignore the Law

The Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin is telling Catholics that they are not obligated to follow lawsthat contradict their faith.

Far from separation of church and state, Martin wants Church to simply ignore the State.

Concerning the Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy Bill, which goes before the Seanad this week, Archbishop Martin said, “There’s a clear Catholic teaching that if legislation is against the basic principles of faith of people that they can’t be forced to carry it out.

Asked whether this right of Catholics not to obey laws in certain circumstances also included legislation on divorce, same-sex marriage and family planning, Archbishop said: “There’s a hierarchy of truths in Catholic teaching and the centrality of some aspects. If people have conscientious objection it’s a very important thing to remember it. For me, very often social change comes from people who stand up for their commitments.”

Martin’s assessment might make former Kentucky clerk Kim Davis proud, but if everyone chose to follow only the laws they wanted to, while claiming a religious defense for ignoring the rest, society wouldn’t function. Martin’s fine with faith trumping civil laws… but I have a hunch he would be saying something very different if we were talking about Muslims and other non-Christians instead of fellow Catholics.

  1. Indeed. Like the law that says raping children is illegal. Catholic priests ignore that all the time.

    • Yes! I did not put it together, but yes they seem to ignore those laws frequently. Hugs

  2. I wonder what they would be saying if the Aztec religion were still around and claiming it shouldn’t have to obey laws against human sacrifice. You have to draw the line somewhere.

  3. Thats exactely what I meant, when we talked about the law-obedience of the upper-clergy. It is close to zero.
I suggest, to introduce the corporal punishment for ever priest that abuses children, without any mitigating circumstances.
    — and for an archbishop, that tries to camouflage, just the same – those shits.

    • Hello Miles. I hope you are well today. Did you see where Cardinal Pell has been found guilty on hiding child abuse / rape and has another trial to go over the accusation that he molested two choir boys. This will get interesting. He is the highest church official yet to be found guilty. The Pope has already removed him from the Popes inner circle. Have a good weekend. Hugs

      • All rules for kids desaster are in the 6000 year old papers. It is necessary to act against those i i n h u m a n churchrules with more strictness.
By that, I mean kid abusing priests and those, who hold there hands above their horryfying heads.
The priest, who rapes a child, has to be made an Eunuch, and the higher clergyman that camoufages, what the priest did in raping a child, has to be made an Eunuch either. – without mitigation.
When do Governments start to defend their kids against the churches terrorizing their children??

Religion or not. – not on any rules written down by STUPIDS living 6000 years ago.

The Governments have to secure the lives not only of their grownups, they also have to secure their Kids frokm the Monsters, called Priests. – and anyone of them, who threatens the life or the sexual integrity of a child should be made an eunuch if he is a member of the monsterguild of the church or has actively made possible – as part of the clergy – that children get severely harmed or even killed – and that means NUNS too!

Kids should NO LONGER belong to their parents; the same laws to protect their lives and their sexual integrity as for grownups should be enforced for children – with NO exemption for churchrules

Churchrules should – with no exemption – be overruled by the states laws.

    • Hello Grabaspine. Yes it seems they make their own rules , and obeying the church comes first. They have become the gods they want to be to the followers, or so it seems. They keep grabbing more power to themselves. Hugs

  5. Religious freedom does not mean freedom to break the law .

    • I agree, but they seem to feel otherwise. How do we enlighten them? Hugs

      • By just doing to them, what they do to their believers: BY Threatening, and if thats not enough, by sending them to prison and punish them there – as a small foretaste of Hell .
Monsters have to be delt with as monsters. Their only privilege should be stricness of law.

  6. At some point, we’re going to have to start charging these people with some kind of “subversion” or “obstruction” felonies for attempting to undermine the government. I found out a couple of years ago that a dozen or so states in the U.S. actually allow you to kill children in the name of religion. (Ah, here it is: — only six states, but still!) “Yes, my child died directly through my action/inaction, and I knew that’s what was going to happen, but… Your Honor, my defense is JEEBUS!” What kind of nonsense is this?

    Comment by Anderson Connors — December 15, 2018 @ 18:21

    • Hello Anderson. It is the kind of religious excuse that infuriates me. I have posted several times on people who wont take their sick children to the doctor because they will pray away the illness. I have a post some where from a page that lists all the people / children who died due to abuse and maltreatment from parents due to religious beliefs. The list is very long and exhausting. This is why these so called religious freedom laws are so dangerous. Have a happy holiday. Hugs

      • The archbishop said: “There’s a hierarchy of truths in Catholic teaching and the centrality of some aspects
So is there also a hierarchy of lies?! So when priests are raping kids ? Thruth is truth and a lie is lie.
It is a lie that the Church-hierarchy does everything to stop Kids bein fucked by priests.
So much to your misguided statement, Mr. Arch-bishop; concerning the hierarchie of existing truths. Would you please stop to make yourself comical, pls.
nobody will stop the catholic church to have a say – NOT the final say – when it comes to abortion, but you have NO SAY, when it comes to Priests Raping kids continuously. with some hidden consent of the upper clergy, as is shown continuously by the higher clergy, preventing that kid-fucking priests are prosecuted by the state, ever so often.
