Woman Who Drowned and Burned Daughter to Please God Cleared of Murder Charges

Filed under: Atheism, Children, Criminal, Family, News, Political, Questions, Reason, Religion — Scottie @ 10:07

Basically if you follow what is written in the Abrahamic holy books you are violating the laws.   The books are violent and their god is nasty.   So is belief in such a god a mental illness in it self?   Hugs

A woman who drowned her own four-year-old daughter then set her on fire in order to please God, basically reenacting a more violent version of the Biblical myth of Abraham and Isaac, has been cleared of all murder charges.

Carly Ann Harris, a mother from Wales, was on trial for the murder of her daughter Amelia. Harris apparently believed sacrificing her daughter would save mankind, and a jury was convinced she was legally insane, which means she won’t receive jail time.

The jury heard Ms Harris developed psychotic symptoms towards the end of 2017 which developed into an acute psychotic illness by Easter.

After drowning Amelia in cold water, she took her body outside before setting it on fire.

The court heard these two acts reflected Old Testament beliefs that they assisted in the process of going to heaven.Neighbours were alerted by children’s screams and called 999 after finding Amelia’s burned body.

If Harris is truly mentally ill, then this was the right decision, but the story still raises a question about what role religion should play in these situations. Suppose she wasn’t mentally ill, but still believed killing her child would make God happy, would that be considered a worthwhile excuse? I would hope not. But then why are we told to admire Abraham for his willingness to do the exact same thing to his son in the Bible? That’s meant to be a story of sacrifice and devotion, not a story about a cruel God making a troubling demand of a follower.

  1. HELLO … GOD STOPPED ABRAHAM. These people obviously haven’t read their fucking Bibles.

    • Hello Silverapplequeen. They just hear what the Pastor or Priest says and in their heads they think they will be the next big church figure who will be showered with their gods love and lead the way of all the evil people back to god. They are sure they will be the hero loved by god and bathed in light. The truth is they are NUTZ! Hugs

In practice the difference between insanity and religious belief is pretty murky. If you killed a child to appease the purple stegosaurus from Neptune who secretly rules the world, that would be judged insane. The identical concept with different terminology is religion.

    • Yes you are correct. Religion gets a pass on stuff in society that nothing else does. Sincerely held religious beliefs is becoming a term to break any law you disagree with. It shouldn’t be that way, but the religious are pushing hard for it. Hugs

  3. Insane in a state of mind that prevents normal perception, behavior, or social interaction; seriously mentally ill.

Couldn’t every hardcore in your face religious nut be termed “insane”.

So much for nice light readung after xmas.

    • Oh I am sorry Michelle. I don’t want to ruin your holiday. I have a question though that maybe you can answer. Several years ago I got into an argument with a person over the subject of mentally ill and crime. I felt that if you committed basically any heinous crime that took life or seriously injured another with the intent to do so, you had a serious mental illness. Heck on the farms growing up I couldn’t be around when the put an animal down, it tore me up. Oten I was told I was too sensitive and needed to “man” up. It just seemed to me normal sane people couldn’t do those things to other humans. I am not say the person shouldn’t be punished, but I was arguing for mental health treatment and a no death penalty stance. But with all horrible things going on and the way people seem to be regarded as disposable by their fellow humans, I am not sure what I think now. Anyway have a grand rest of the holiday. Hugs

      • I don’t think being insane is an excuse to do awful things without punishments. The devil made me do it is bullcrap. As you said sane people don’t do irrational things. Could I kill another human? In defense of my children or my own life sure I could. Outside of that I don’t think I could. But defending my family is a sane choice. Of course defense can be to run, call for help or hunker down in a safe place. It doesn’t always mean shooting someone else. I’d try the other options first. that would demonstrate sanity by the way. 🙂

You didn’t ruin Xmas. I stayed offline all together on Xmas for that reason. Hugs

        • I agree with you. I never had a problem being in the military and the possibility I would have to kill to protect my friends , defend others people, and country? I think defending your family is sane , infact look at all the movies where the hero has to kill or hurt others to defend the ones under threat.

A few days ago I watched the news and they showed a situation in Las Vegas. An 80 year old man walked up to his car using a cane. when he opened the door, three young men jumped him started beating him and once he was down on the ground they started kicking him. The got his keys and wallet and took his car leaving him there on the ground of the parking lot. Michelle I will admit I was angry. I wanted to lash out at those guys. I wanted them to be punished and I want it to really be onerous for them. I wanted them punished, not rehabilitated. Then I remembered how I had argued that to hurt others like that you had to have a serious mental illness, something causing a break from reality. But I think these young guys simply wanted money and a car and went after the most vulnerable one they could find. So I guess maybe my theory is wrong. Maybe there are simply people out there who lack whatever it is that makes the rest of us human. Hugs

I have to say I think it is an insult to animals to call what tRump and his ilk are animals. I think animals act according to their instincts and environment better and with more over all reason. Wild animals or those not cared for kill to survive. They don’t normally go around shitting on each other just for the fun of it. In packs there is a hierarchy, but once sorted out, everyone works together for the benefit of all. Now I admit I am not a nationalist or biologist so I am just going off things I have read and seen around me. I could be wrong. Hugs

You can predict wild animal behaviors and that is 100% true…

            • I watched a news show this morning. A black woman with three children in the car with her had a white man pull up along side her and start shooting. She was injured, one daughter killed, I think they said the other injured. The mother did nothing to incite the other driver. The police say there was no reason, other than race. A mother with out a child, the siblings had to watch their sister die from a gunshot wound to the head next to them, all because of skin tone. You are correct , some people do not deserve to live … in a civil society. I know I am all for justice reform, fair treatment of prisoners, rehabilitation in stead of just punishment Michelle, but I am finding it harder and harder all the time. This stuff gets me more and more, it hurts harder , I am not as able to reason it. I just don’t understand it. Be safe, best to your family. Hugs
