Birmingham’s ABC affiliate reports:

A father has died after last weekend’s accidental shooting in the parking lot of Chuck E. Cheese’s in Vestavia Hills. The Jefferson County Coroner has identified the victim Timothy Roshun Smith Jr. He was 22.

Lt. Michael Keller with Vestavia Hills PD confirms Smith and his daughter were shot in the restaurant’s parking lot while Smith was changing his daughter’s diaper. Smith was shot in the chest and the child was shot in the leg.

The Birmingham Herald reports:

Keller said the gun was inside a bag in the vehicle. The preliminary information is that the adult male victim was about to change the girl’s diaper when he came in contact with the gun inside the bag and it fired. The single bullet discharged hit him in the chest, and then the girl.

    • Hello Nation. Yes. I would add a laugh emoji but I am too sad at this story. I ask myself why this has to be in our country? What is wrong with the way people think in the US? How do people think a loaded weapon in a diaper bag is a good thing? Study after study shows the one most likely to be hurt by a gun in the home or car is the family themselves. Hugs

      • Gun-lovers would call the man stupid (which he was) and totally disassociate themselves from such actions, declaring they would NEVER do such a thing.

Of course, this doesn’t mean they wouldn’t do something else just as inane … but in their minds, it’s all justified.

        • Hello Nan. Humans have always found a way to justify something they want to do regardless if it makes sense or if it causes great harm. Hugs

  2. It’s not accidental, it’s carelessness. I wish that there was someway to change how these are reported, much as we stopped saying car accident and call them crashes these days. This isn’t an accident, it’s careless gun handling.
