  1. I liked this article. This says it all, and I have to wonder if any republican would ever read it.

    • Hello Randy. If they did read it would they understand it? did you ever watch the new West World on HBO? The created being ( robots or whatever you call them ) were given the ability not to see something that interfered with their perception of reality. That to me is the Republicans / deplorables now. 2. They are not reading things like this. There are a couple of right-wing blogs I sometimes look at and they are completely fixed on their own alternate reality. One of them seems to get most of his news from the QAnon stuff and he still thinks there are going to be mass arrests of the huge underground cult of Satanist child molesters led by Hillary and Obama any minute now. News or information from the real world can’t penetrate.

Bruce Gerencser’s blog mostly focuses on atheism vs. religion, not on politics, but it’s the same thing. Often some fundie runs across it, realizes Bruce is an atheist who used to be a pastor, and sends him an e-mail rant that makes it clear they’d hardly read anything of the blog. These people are what I call “stuck in broadcast mode”. They just endlessly transmit their own talking points and can’t change setting to listen to anybody else.

    • Hello Infidel. You have a stronger stomach than I do to wade through delusions. I can not understand this need some people have for conspiracies, and the QAnon one is so stupid I really can not accept these people believe it. I know some of them do, I just don’t understand why?

I am sure you are right that the right wingers do not read this stuff, but I think a lot of the independent and “center” voters need to. I know I need to keep reading these things like this. I can not remember all the horrible stuff tRump and crew have done so reminders are important to help me remember. I feel like I fell into the manure spreader and I am floating in shit up to my arm pits. One misstep and I could go under. Yes as a kid I did slide off the barn floor into the spreader in the pit. Don’t ask !!!! 🤣😂😁😖🤢🤮

So would you say that these people are unreachable? Do we write them off? I know the cult of tRump can not be reasoned with anymore than a evangelical / fundamental Christian. But what is the cut off point? Should the Dem candidates go on State TV? Hugs

      • First, I always think of people as falling along a spectrum (or rather along gradations of many kinds), not as being part of sharply-bounded groups completely distinct from each other. At the extreme, yes, many Trumpanzees are unreachable, or may never be reachable until crushing disappointment and perhaps old age make them more open to the realization that they were conned. I’m convinced that a lot of the more weird and paranoid and hateful right-wing beliefs are driven by a combination of rage, fear, and wishful thinking, plus in many cases a psychological need to preserve a sense of superiority. It’s almost impossible to make a dent in that kind of mentality using facts and logic. Also, many of them are poorly educated and thus not good at assessing evidence. Logical thought separated from emotional biases is not natural to humans — it’s a learned behavior, and people who weren’t trained to do it generally don’t develop it spontaneously.

Then there’s the spectrum of people stretched out between that mentality and fully reality-based thinking. For every new set of facts and evidence, every new act of obvious insanity by Trump, there’s a slightly bigger range of those people that become reachable. Think of it as a yardstick, with the 36-inch mark being the totally delusional QAnon nuts and the 0 point being “normal” conservatives without delusional beliefs or serious bigotries. The people from, say the 0 to the 10-inch mark are already disgusted with Trump. As more evidence comes out about family separation, collusion with Russia, the harm his tariffs are doing to conservative parts of the country, etc., the people between 10 and maybe 15 or 20 become potentially reachable, though with increasing difficulty the further out you get. Some of them are also reachable by means that step outside the left-right spectrum — many rural poor white people support Medicare-for-all out of sheer self-interest, for example. Some of them could be persuaded to vote Democratic on issues like that despite their ingrained hatred of the party of nggers, fgs, and big cities. Not many, but maybe enough to make a difference. Beyond that are people who never even read or look at anything that might undeceive them, telling themselves it’s all fake news. The people from 20 to 25 might be persuadable with extreme difficulty if they could ever be exposed to real information. The ones from 25 to 36 are the hard core which will never change no matter what.

And yes, the people who are unreachable under whatever set of conditions actually exists, however many they are — they’re essentially write-offs. We just have to out-vote them (including doing so by a big enough margin to overcome the problems posed by gerrymandering, vote suppression, the Electoral College, etc.) and minimize their influence as much as we can. It’s doable. There was never any possibility that 100% of the population would become liberal. But that’s not what we need. We need to motivate our own base to vote and be active, and persuade as many people on the nearer part of the yardstick as we can. And remember, that whole conservative yardstick is less than half the total population.

I generally favor Democrats going on Fox if they so choose. Every case like this allows us to reach some people who would never otherwise hear us.
