Officials horrified after first graders get ahold of gun meant to protect school against mass shootings

Officials at an Ohio elementary school were shocked to learn that a gun stored on campus was found by two first-grade students who picked it up and removed it from its case, The Columbus Dispatch reports.

According to reports, transportation director Vicky Nelson, who was trained as part of the district’s concealed carry program and allowed to have a gun on school grounds, left her firearm in an unlocked case as she went to the restroom. Also in the office was her grandson and the daughter of a co-worker, who were both first graders. When she returned from the restroom, she saw that the gun had been taken out of its case and left on the desk.

“I’m assuming that the child picked up the gun from behind the desk and had been holding it,” Superintendent Dan Freund said.

  1. SERIOUSLY?!? I’m glad no one got hurt, but I think that’s going to be a trend for some of these schools.

    • Hello Ospreyshire. Yes you are correct. Teachers and school personnel are just humans as well. Their main job is not anything to do with the gun so they are going to forget it, not remember to secure it, or leave it in an unsafe conditions. It is just a bad situation. Hugs

      • And the truly sad part about this event is that had one of the children shot and killed the other, the gun-lovers would have given a moment or two of sympathy, but would immediately defend the practice by saying it was an isolated incident.

        • Hello Nan. Great point. As I have mentioned every one thinks they are the responsible gun owners who do everything correctly, yet these events still happen. I bet that guy I posted a few days ago that held the trigger and jacked the slide of the shot gun though he was responsible gun owner. Hugs

          • No one is exempt from accidents. I heard of someone who was demonstrating a pistol to a friend — convinced it was unloaded — and ended up shooting a hole in the wall with the bullet ending up in the neighbor’s washroom! Thank goodness no one was doing laundry!!

            • Hello Nan. That is the problem. Humans are not perfect and with more guns there are going to be more accidents. That is why more guns in schools and offices is a bad idea. Hugs

      • Exactly. It’s a recipe for disaster and I fear something bad will happen.
