California church leaders charged with forced labor of homeless, US attorney says

Imperial Valley Ministries leaders recruited people by promising food and shelter, and instead forced them to beg for money for nine hours a day, six days a week and to give up their welfare benefits “for the financial benefit of the church leaders,” prosecutors said in a news release Tuesday that announced the indictment had been unsealed.

“The indictment alleges an appalling abuse of power by church officials who preyed on vulnerable homeless people with promises of a warm bed and meals,” Brewer said. “These victims were held captive, stripped of their humble financial means, their identification, their freedom and their dignity.”
The indictment alleges church leaders kept victims inside group homes with deadbolt locks only they had keys to and confiscated IDs such as driver’s licenses, immigration papers and passports to prevent victims from escaping.
One victim was a 17-year-old girl who escaped by breaking out of a window, Brewer said. She went to the police, he said.

  1. Just when I didn’t think I could hear anything worse about religion.

    • Hello appletonavenue. They are taking their cues from our government that uses prisoners in for profit prisons who are sentenced under unreasonable drug laws as slave labor for companies and corporations. It is the near end of a totalitarian capitalist approach all other sane governments have rejected. Why does the US keep putting more and more of the total resources into the military budget at the same time militarizing the police in the country? Religion was started as a way to control the masses, a way to control the behavior of the people, and one they couldn’t verify or check on. It also served to move anything of value from the population to the leaders of the religion. The bible is full of examples of “giving to the temple” or needing to buy this or that for such ritual, mandated of course by the priests of the religion. Hugs

      • I can’t imagine how we get away from this misuse and abuse of people. I have never understood how being an addict (which so many of our prisoners were) became a crime. Oh, I know. About the time Reagan declared his War on Drugs.

        • Hello appletonavenue. I think progressive education is the key. Stop teaching kids that the are damned if they touch themselves. But also the progressive way that accentuates science and minimizes religion is also a good way to move in the future. Hugs
