This Is No Ordinary Impeachment

He seems to think in the Ukraine context that l’état c’est moi is the core American truth, rather than a French monarch’s claims to absolute power. He believes in the kind of executive power the Founders designed the U.S. Constitution to prevent. It therefore did not occur to Trump that blackmailing a foreign country to investigate his political opponents is a classic abuse of power, because he is incapable of viewing his own interests and the interests of the United States as in any way distinct. But it is a core premise of our liberal democracy that the powers of the presidency are merely on loan, and that using them to advance a personal interest is a definition of an abuse of power.

And the GOP as a whole has consistently backed Trump rather than the Constitution. Sixty-two percent of Republican supporters have said that there is nothing Trump could do, no crime or war crime, no high crime or misdemeanor, that would lead them to vote against him in 2020. There is only one way to describe this, and that is a cult, completely resistant to reason or debate. The tribalism is so deep that Trump seems incapable of dropping below 40 percent in the national polls, and is competitive in many swing states. The cult is so strong that Trump feels invulnerable. If Trump survives impeachment, and loses the 2020 election, he may declare it another coup, rigged, and illegitimate. He may refuse to concede. And it is possible the GOP will follow his lead. That this is even thinkable reveals the full extent of our constitutional rot.

  1. This is waaaay too close to the TRUTH!!!

And this line sums it up perfectly — he is incapable of viewing his own interests and the interests of the United States as in any way distinct

    • Hello Nan. So true. His ego or his natural tendency to want to be an absolute authoritarian ruler makes him think that when he was elected he was given ultimate authority to do anything to help him self he wanted. He really seems to think all facets of government are there to serve him. I remember that right away there was a huge shouting match between him and Moscow Mitch that tRump was demanding he ruled and Moscow Mitch was shouting back that he did not work for tRump. tRump has no idea how the US government works or should work. Hugs

      • It’s this very thing that the “deplorables” could not see when they elected Trump! They were all fluttery because, in their minds, he was a “successful” businessman and to them, that made him MORE than qualified to be the leader of this country. They were absolutely certain he was going to go in and add the U.S. to his roster of “successful” businesses.

WRONG!!! So very WRONG!!! And unfortunately, they are blind to it. From their perspective, it’s all the “other guys” who have resisted Trump’s valiant efforts to MAGA. They’re absolutely certain that if people would just quit getting in his way, everything would be P.E.R.F.E.C.T.

And of course, above and beyond all that … Trump believes the same thing.

        • Hello Nan. So very true. I believe we need to write off that portion of society , yet I read in the news people saying the Democrats need to go more right to entice these people to vote for them. That is not going to happen, these cult members will stick with tRump no matter what ever happens. Hugs

  2. He is a classic malignant narcissist. He’ll take us all down before he ever admits he’s screwed up.

    • Hello alienredqueen. Very true, you really captured the fear a lot of us have. He will destroy normal decency and burn the country to the ground before he ever admits he is wrong on anything. He is incapable of understanding he is not perfect because he really thinks he is the best of everything. Talk about the dunning-Kruger effect on steroids. Hugs
