Amy Klobuchar’s record as prosecutor faces new scrutiny after George Floyd killing

Former presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar is taking heat in some circles for failure to prosecute police during her time as a Hennepin County Attorney in Minnesota in the wake of George Floyd’s death.

One of the officers who killed Floyd, an unarmed black man, on Monday in Minneapolis fatally shot a suspect in 2006 but was not prosecuted.

Derek Chauvin was one of six cops who shot and killed Wayne Reyes in October 2006 following a car chase, according to watchdog group Communities United Against Police Brutality. All officers involved said that Reyes had pulled a shotgun after stabbing two people prior to the chase.

Klobuchar was Hennepin County Attorney from 1999-2007, when she entered the U.S. Senate. The investigation that ended with no charges against Chauvin concluded after Klobuchar had left the prosecutor post for the Senate.

As the Washington Post reported in March 2019, Klobuchar did not prosecute police officers involved in the deaths of black men while she was Hennepin County prosecutor.

Chauvin, the officer seen in the video with his knee on Floyd’s neck as Floyd begs for mercy and repeatedly says, “I can’t breathe,” had at least 12 complaints filed against him in his 19 years on the job and was involved in other shootings as well.

In 2008, more than a year after Klobuchar had won that Senate seat and was no longer county prosecutor, Chauvin shot 21-year-old Ira Toles after responding to a domestic assault call, Pioneer Press reported at the time. Toles was charged with two counts of resisting arrest.

And in 2011, Chauvin was one of five officers placed on leave after another non-fatal shooting, the Daily Beast reported. Chauvin did not fire his gun that time.

Biden must not chose her as his running mate.   She is a poison pill at this point.  Hugs

  1. Hopefully this information is made available to him as well as to “us.” If the black community was made aware — or is aware — of her record, it would definitely be a strike against Biden.

    • Hello Nan. I was wondering why on some of the news sites I view there were warnings for Biden to not pick Her. I did not know the details but I knew it has something to do with charging poor black people and not white people, but this is the first I knew the full story. Yes people like Bill Maher advocate on their shows for him to pick her, but it will be giving the win to tRump. Hugs

      • I don’t subscribe to HBO so I never watch Murray. However, in the past, I thought he was pretty liberal in his perspectives but from some things I’ve read lately, I’m getting a different impression. Is it me or is he changing?

        • Hello Nan. He has seriously changed. He use to be progressive and non main stream. He use to even be funny. But the more money he made, the older he has gotten , the more he moved to the right. For example he know thinks Amy Klobuchar was the perfect presidential pick. He is now a centralist, he is socially left but economically conservative right. His only real left issue is marijuana legalization, and he wants the LGBTQ+ to cool it and calm down, not be so open. He calls college kids snowflakes, and he thinks the kids today need to grow up. He really sounds like a older Republican who thinks he is right about everything. His show is now that if you disagree with him you are wrong and he agrees with the right wingers on his show more than the left wing people. He really wants tRump to lose, but he thinks the way to do that is to have the left become the right. He is very clear he wants center to right candidates to appeal to the center right. Hell that is not the left is it? That is called being a Republican. Plus everything now about the CV19 in his mind is people in the US have bad diets and are too fat. He is a vegan, and he keeps bring it around to that no matter who he has on. I stopped watching him a few shows ago, he simply is not funny and is too far to the right for me to enjoy. Hugs

          • Thanks for the fill-in. I was pretty sure his outlook had changed considerably … you’ve confirmed it.
