The Many Things In My Toy Box ….my view may change due to verifiable evidence

I realize to Republicans the average person in the country is a peon to used in the great economic cog creating wealth for the upper levels of society.    However the idea of sacrificing children to please the gods to make things better went out in most places in the world a long time ago.  But it seems the Republicans are willing to bring it back.   Hugs

Just weeks before schools must open across Florida, the numbers of new cases and hospitalizations due to Covid-19 have surged.

On July 16, the state had a total of 23,170 children ages 17 and under who had tested positive since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the Florida Department of Health. By July 24, that number jumped to 31,150.
That’s a 34% increase in new cases among children in eight days.
And more children in Florida are requiring hospitalization. As of July 16, 246 children had been hospitalized with coronavirus. By July 24, that number had jumped to 303.
That’s a 23% increase in child Covid-19 hospitalizations in eight days.
During that same time period, the death toll among children in Florida went from 4 to 5.
On July 18, Kimora “Kimmie” Lynum died from Covid-19 complications, according to state health department records. The 9-year-old girl’s family said Kimmie had no known pre-existing conditions.
The surges in child Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations come amid rampant debate over whether children should return to classrooms this fall, or if they should continue remote learning.
They also directly contradict US Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’ claims that children are “stoppers of the disease” who “don’t get it and transmit it themselves.”
Researchers in South Korea found that young people between ages 10 and 19 transmit the virus just as easily as adults.
But it’s not just the numbers of new cases and hospitalizations that are rising in Florida. The test positivity rate among children has gone up, too — from 13.4% to 14.4% between July 16 and 24, according to the state health department.
The test positivity rate for children was particularly high in Martin County (25.3%) and Miami-Dade County (19.6%).
But the state has ordered schools to physically open next month. In some districts, that means sending children to school in as soon as two weeks. And that has some parents, educators, and doctors on edge.

Scottie – what do you think authorities will do if a majority of parents refuse to send their kids to school? Arrest them? March the kids at gunpoint to their local schools? Here in CA, our State Public Health Officer has the final say, (relayed by the Gov,) as to ANY establishments reopening or not. And so far, the biggest pushback, (and THE MOST LAWSUITS) are coming from the Talibangelical and Megachurches, for violation of their 1 A rights. Except these frivolous suits are getting tossed repeatedly, because no one is being denied their right to worship, it’s their right to assemble any place they damn well please, and expose a multitude of others to a potentially painful death. They are simply being told that THEY have to obey State Directives, which carry the Force of Law, in order to keep the Public as safe as possible.

Hello Nan. Talk about bad company! What got me about the article is that they talked about people having mental health issues including being suicidal and not once did they recommend or try to get those people profesional help. Worship was what they recommended. Really caring people? Hugs

Hello Dennis. I think the Republicans in congress are already starting the process of forcing people to send their kids back to in person schools. The Republicans in congress will use the funding levers, and the Republican governors will issue state orders to do so and again use state funds as levers. I do think a lot of parents are going to band together and have one home be the learning home where the kids go to do online learning together under the watchful eyes of adults. But I do not see large scale openings of schools as just one infected child would cause every school to be closed again. It would be a nightmare. tRump thinks the magic cure is to just force people be exposed, get sick, get better, and get him elected and the money flowing. It simply doesn’t hit him that not everyone has it easy, there are known long term effects, and many have already died and more surely will. Over 148,000 dead and not one word about them from tRump. PLUS!! It isn’t just the CHILDREN who can/may/might get infected. It’s all the ADULTS … teachers (of course), but also cafeteria workers, nurses, principal, office staff (of which my daughter is one) …

But who cares? Trump wants it to happen so everyone hops to it. Right?

Hello Nan. Yes. But why does tRump want it so desperately. They say it is his belief that the path to his getting reelected is in the public thinking everything is back to pre-covid days. But now we have seen what happens with opening up too early and too much and that has to hurt his chances? Also tRump is back to pushing his miracle drug cure that is proven to be no help at best and makes things much worse in most cases. Why? It makes no sense and it made him a laughing stock, why push it again now? Hugs
