Trump vows to block stimulus funding for mail-in voting and USPS

President Trump on Thursday told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo that Democratic demands to fund mail-in voting and the U.S. Postal Service in ongoing coronavirus stimulus negotiations were a non-starter.

Why it matters: Trump directly linked Democrats’ desired $3.6 billion for mail-in voting and $25 billion for the USPS to his continued baseless claims that increased mail-in voting will lead to widespread voter fraud.

  • “Those are just two items. But if they don’t get those two items, that means you can’t have universal mail-in voting because they’re not equipped to have it,” Trump said.
  • He claimed the 2020 election could lead to “the greatest fraud in history.”
  • The president expressed similar feelings during his press briefing on Wednesday. “They don’t have the money to do the universal mail-in voting. So therefore, they can’t do it, I guess. … Are they going to do it even if they don’t have the money?” he said.

Worth noting: Fraud from mail-in voting has historically been rare, according to the Brennan Center, with Oregon — a state that votes primarily by mail — documenting only about a dozen cases of fraud out of more than 100 million ballots since 2000.

What they’re saying: Biden campaign spokesman Andrew Bates issued a statement Thursday calling Trump’s comments “an assault on our democracy and economy.”

  • “The President of the United States is sabotaging a basic service that hundreds of millions of people rely upon, cutting a critical lifeline for rural economies and for delivery of medicines, because he wants to deprive Americans of their fundamental right to vote safely during the most catastrophic public health crisis in over 100 years.”
  • “This is an assault on our democracy and economy by a desperate man who’s terrified that the American people will force him to confront what he’s done everything in his power to escape for months — responsibility for his own actions.”

THIS is what the press needs to focus on. To Trump, it’s all about the election. But to the PEOPLE, it’s about getting not only medications, but innumerable documents that must be mailed because either internet is not available in their part of the country or they (especially the elderly) don’t use it. But of course in Trump’s little bitty brain, it’s all about HIM. (Surprise! Surprise!)

  • Scottie, it is absolutely amazing that a president of the United States would go out of his way to squelch voting. It should be noted, when I read this today, I had just received a mailer from the Republican Party on how to vote by mail. Last week, my local election board sent a mailer as well. So, Trump is again going against the wishes of his party.

Fortunately, state and local officials are ignoring the president as they press ahead. It would be nice if he helped the process rather than hindered it. Five states use mail in voting exclusively and thirty five use it to not insignificant degrees.

People need to wake up and recognize what is obvious to many. The incumbent president is the most corrupt and deceitful president in my lifetime, including Richard Nixon. Taking the president at his word is a fool’s errand.

    • Hello Keith. It is even worse than just blocking funding for the mail and slowing the mailed votes. They are suing counties in PA that normally vote blue, they are planning to challenge any mailed vote without a post mark as many states use convenient drop boxes, and in some states the Republican party in charge is making it so it is really difficult to mail or find a place to drop your ballot off. All over the nation there is a serious attempt to make Democrats second class citizens in the US and so that their vote won’t count. Hugs
