Trump Vows To Station Police At Polling Locations

Trump Vows To Station Police At Polling Locations

CNN reports:

President Donald Trump on Thursday said he would send law enforcement officials to polling locations to guard against voter fraud in November’s election, although it’s not clear he has the authority to do so. “We’re going to have sheriffs, and we’re going to have law enforcement, and we’re going to have, hopefully, US attorneys, and we’re going to have everybody and attorney generals (sic),” Trump said during an interview on Fox News with Sean Hannity.

Trump’s comments come as his campaign works to recruit tens of thousands of volunteers for what Republican officials have said could be their largest poll-watching operation. Even before Trump’s comments, his party’s plans to monitor the polls have sparked charges from Democrats and voting-rights groups that Republicans are gearing up to suppress voting in key states.

The Washington Post reports:

“Trump has no authority to deploy local law enforcement officials to monitor elections, although his campaign could hire off-duty police to work the polls, said Rick Hasen, an election law expert at the University of California at Irvine,” Fredreka Schouten reports.

“If Trump did so, it likely would trigger legal action from Democrats, who would claim the move amounted to a voter-suppression tactic. And it would have echoes of a case that resulted in a federal court decree that for decades sharply restricted the Republican National Committee’s ‘ballot security’ work without prior judicial approval.”

I doubt there are any police at any polling site. But threats like this are enough to keep some people away. That’s why he makes them.

Hello Polly. I agree that just the treat is enough to keep people away, and then if his armed militia goons camp out at voting places in majority minority areas that also is intimidating. These tactics are used in authoritarian banana republics and authoritarian governments. I am trying to remember if I have seen any police in my mostly white red area of Florida. I think during the primary their was one police officer helping out as a volunteer but I think he was off duty because while in uniform he had the vest that all the voting staffers wore. Hugs

although it’s not clear he has the authority to do so … When did that stop him? I mean, really! How many times has it been reported that his actions were overstepping legal bounds … and yet it still happened!?!!? His lawyers are geniuses when it comes to covering his BIG ass.

Hello Nan. Yes I agree. The problem is the Republicans in congress have become the cult of tRump. He has scared them into letting him do what ever he wants against the way our system was designed where they are supposed to be the check on a runaway president. Our system failed due to peoples greed and desire to keep their position to graft. Hugs

Trump and Barr will attempt to intimidate Black voters by having corrupt police officers harass the Black communities. However, we are accustomed to both parties denying us our voting rights. I’ll tell you no one is gonna stop us from voting Trump out of office.

Hello Angela. I am glad to hear you wont be deterred from voting. I am saddened to hear you say both parties have tried to stop POC from voting. Would you let me know your thoughts on this? I do not want anyone to have their right to vote denied. It is a right, not a privilege and it shall not be abridged. I feel the same about people in prisons / jail. They should be allowed to vote and have their vote counted. I do hope we can not only vote tRump out but also take the Senate so this country really can get back to helping the people. Hugs
