Cornyn says he broke with Trump on deficit, border wall, but kept opposition private

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn acknowledged Friday that at times he has disagreed with President Trump on issues such as budget deficits and debt, tariffs and trade agreements and border security.

But, the senior Republican senator from Texas, who is being challenged by Democrat MJ Hegar, said he chose to work on those disagreements with the president’s staff in private discussions, rather than by publicly voicing his opposition.

Although polls show Cornyn with a small lead over Hegar, both candidates are vying for undecided voters during an extraordinary election season in which many once-solid Republican public office seats are now in reach for Democrats.

During a meeting with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram Editorial Board, Cornyn was asked if he and other Republicans regretted not pushing Trump to combat the COVID-19 virus more aggressively, or rein in some of his political stances that were unpopular or stood little chance of passing in Congress.

Cornyn initially described his relationship with Trump as “maybe like a lot of women who get married and think they’re going to change their spouse, and that doesn’t usually work out very well.”

Cornyn continued: “I think what we found is that we’re not going to change President Trump. He is who he is. You either love him or hate him, and there’s not much in between. What I tried to do is not get into public confrontations and fights with him because, as I’ve observed, those usually don’t end too well.”

There is more at the link above.   He tires to say he spent a lot of time pushing back against tRump, but privately so tRump wouldn’t know?   WTF?  Anyway he is in a very tight race and needs to show he is not cowed by tRump and is not a tRump sycophant.   Hugs

    Hi Scottie;
So, if I’m reading this right, he’s either passive-aggressive and weak or a complicit liar now trying to distance himself after the crimes. A real stand-up guy, his constituents should be proud.

Scottie, so I guess he is on double-secret probation. This also implies he is OK with Trump’s corrupt and deceitful behavior dividing America more and trashing our allied relationships. Keith

Hello Keith. Yup. He is in a really tight race and thinks independent voters will buy his claiming not to be a tRump sycophant. But the voting record is clear, he votes for / with tRump wishes every time. How can he claim to have not assisted tRump if he never challenged him in anyway that anyone noticed, but publicly supported him at every turn. What a brave guy waiting until now to claim to be his own person. Hugs

Of course he did it privately! For the very reason pointed out in another of your posts … anyone that publicly disagrees with Trump will suffer his vindictive retribution.

Hello Nan. But yet now he wants us to be believed he was never afraid of tRump and opposed him to the WH staff. We know that is not true because the staff would have loved to tell tRump about it just to see the fireworks. So he was lying then, and he is lying now. Yet the people voting for him don’t care, they will take what he is saying as truth so it gives them cover. Hugs.

OT. Early voting started today here. It is also raining, going to all week, sometimes hard. The polls open at 10. In a lot of places the people started lining up at 5AM. Some places are having 2 hour waits. I have a few more names of local races to check and then we will go tomorrow or Wed. I am taking my walker. I have never seen it like this. Hugs

It seems voting is a BIG THING this year. Fingers and toes crossed that it’s because people want new leadership!

Our ballots arrived in the mail on Saturday. I’ll most likely return mine in the next day or so.

We have a close race between the incumbent Democrat and a Republican contender for our district U.S. Rep. The Repuke is backed by Trump (naturally) and has accumulated more contributions (gee, I wonder why?). The Democrat has held the office for several years so of course “they” are saying we need “new blood.”

What makes this particular race stand out is because the Repuke was “the hero” who thwarted the gunman’s attack on a Paris train in 2015 (remember that?). He was also on Dancing With The Stars (didn’t win). AND … he played himself in a moved based on the Paris incident. So, as you can see, he has really “great” credentials/qualifications for the office. And of course, since he has NO experience, his ads are nothing but criticisms of the current office-holder. Oh … and he also ran for a county commissioner position in 2018 — and lost. I’m hoping history will repeat itself.

Hello Nan. I agree with you so much it is hard to express. What is with celebrity candidates now? It started before tRump with Sarah Palin. But at least she was already a politician. She was clueless on any issues, couldn’t say what newspapers or news she read. But was worshiped by the right. tRump is an example of this. It seems the right prefers the myth to reality. Hugs

OT — Just tried to “like” your response after I read it and no-go. I had to go into the Reader for it to “take.”

I’m finding out that sometimes (not always), if I log-on to leave a comment, the system will “recognize” me when I do future “likes.” And to make it even more confusing, not every blog will reject my “like” — just certain ones. Again, I wonder if it’s because the person is using one of the new themes.

BTW, no rush on contacting Support. Whenever you get around to it. I’ll manage (and grumble, grumble) in the meantime.

On topic — it seems so long as the individual puts an “R” behind his/her name, that’s all that matters.

Hello Nan. Just got done researching all our local candidates on our ballot and writing it up for Ron and I to take with us to the voting tomorrow.

As for the likes, I once had a problem with that when I would leave a tab open over night but take the computer off line. When I would go back on line in order to like a tabbed page I would have to then refresh the open tab I was trying to like. Turned out the fault was in my browser. After I dumped the computer and reloaded I never had that problem again. Not saying that is your problem, just a thought. Did you send me what you would like me to ask support? Or should I just wing it? I figure I will do it Thursday.

Yes the US has become tribal, but again I think that starts with the overly religious. My sect good, yours bad even if are of the same main religion. Hugs
