Trailer park tenants say landlord sends note implying a vote for Biden is a vote for increased rent

The landlord of a trailer park in Fort Morgan allegedly sent a note to residents warning rent would most likely double in price if Joe Biden becomes president.

9NEWS received several emails from Fort Morgan residents concerned about the legality of the letter, calling it a form of voter suppression.

The Colorado Secretary of State’s office confirmed they have received a complaint, and told 9NEWS they passed it along to the Attorney General.

According to several pictures of the letter sent to 9NEWS, it reads:

Please understand IF Joe Biden is elected as our next President, everything you do and have to pay for will change completely.

Everything will be increased. Like paying ALOT (sic) more in taxes, utilities, gasoline, groceries, new permits, fees and regulations…everything! This also means YOUR RENT will be increased to cover these expenses. Most likely, rent would DOUBLE in price!

IF the current President is re-elected, WE WILL NOT RAISE THE RENT FOR AT LEAST 2 YEARS!

Voting is your choice and we are not telling you how to vote. We are just informing our tenants what WE will do according to the election results.

If Trump wins, we all win. If Biden wins, we all lose.

VOTE on November 3, 2020.”

9NEWS reached out to the landlord multiple times for comment and has not heard back.

“I mean, we can’t control how this whole election goes,” Cindy Marquez, a tenant of the trailer park, told 9NEWS. “We can’t control what everyone else does, you know? We can’t control the results.”

Marquez said she got the letter last night, although it was dated Oct. 19. She translated it to her Spanish-speaking parents and immediately called her neighbors.

“I mean everybody was pretty shocked, honestly,” Marquez said. “It was mainly hurtful, you know? How could someone say something like that or basically threaten us according to something that we can’t control?”

Marquez said her family has lived in the trailer park for 20 years, and they have never seen anything like this from landlords before.

They said they are concerned for themselves and their neighbors, because if rent doubles after the election in November, they may not be able to afford to stay.

“Our family lives paycheck to paycheck and right now we barely make things out with what we get,” she said.

How is this not voter intimidation.  This is a clear threat.   This is what places that do not want union threaten to the workers to keep them from voting for a union.   Hugs

    • Hello Nan. Maybe not but it is too late to change anything. The people got the letters and maybe got really scared that they would lose their housings. Republicans love to do this shit. I post something like this every election. The wealthy making money off the poor love to do this shit. When I worked 6 months for Walmart they pulled this same stunt over unions, threatening to fire people, shut down entire stores, and lower wages if the workers voted for a union. It terrified the poor people who needed the little money they got working at Walmart in abusive condition so they voted no on unions. It is all a process of intimidation to get what you want, the haves over the have nots. Or in todays case, the Republican thugs over those who believe in democracy. Hugs

  • I’d love to find his rationale on raising rent rates and whatnot. Seriously, how is Biden’s win suddenly gonna mean rates must go up? I’d love to get somebody to get a lawyer and ask how the hell this is supposed to be.

    • Hello Chatty Introvert. It is an old canard, a myth found wrong. The old saying was Republicans were fiscally conservatives and Democrats were the party of tax and spend. History has show the reverse. The economy does better under Democratic administrations, with people having more money to spend. Republicans cut tax revenues and put it on the debt. But old myths die hard. Hugs

      • What sucks is we still cling to the idea that the sitting president determines the economy. There are tons of forces at play that are usually put through by previous administrations (unless you’ve got a 2-termer that’s had a chance to fix or promote things and be there to watch it). They may not come to fruition until the next administration. But it’s an unfortunate tendency that Republicans presidents will run the debt up and Dems (with “fiscal conservative” Republicans yanking them back down to earth) end up cleaning up the mess. Then the cycle begins again.

You know, just writing that, I think it works that way so Republicans get what they want, but they’re so afraid if Democrat presidents get the backing to play with the purse strings, then we’ll end up in some socialist fantasyland or something. Hmm… our government really is more center right than the rest of the country because of these shenanigans.

  • Hi Scottie;
This is not legal, imo, because it was sent under the cover of his title and in regard to how the business would operate in accord to the residents. In short, the landlord proposed not only a purchase of their vote – ie: vote for gain, but clearly implied a threat for the vote. It, quite frankly, is old school oppression. He might as well have said “Nice place you got here. Shame if something happened to it”.

    • Hello Randy. Well put brother. We have to stand up against these anti democracy people. These freedom lovers who do not want others to have freedom. Hugs
