Republicans say all 100,000 ballots must be tossed.

Texas Republicans have asked a federal judge to throw out 100,000 ballots in Harris County cast through curbside voting. They drew Judge Andrew Hanen, one of the most notoriously partisan Republican judges in the entire federal judiciary. This is alarming.

Judge Hanen has already scheduled an emergency hearing for Monday morning—without even giving Harris County a chance to file a response brief. This, too, is extremely concerning. It looks like he may be rushing to throw out 100,000 disproportionately Democratic votes.

Texas Republicans are deploying the theory—recently endorsed by Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh—that only state legislatures have authority over elections. Because the Harris County Clerk implemented drive-through voting, Republicans say all 100,000 ballots must be tossed.

Two partisan federal judges are already trying to nullify thousands of Minnesota ballots under this radical theory. I am deeply concerned that Judge Hanen, too, will use it to disenfranchise 100,000 Texans on the eve of Election Day. This is frightening.

Republicans are racing to federal court because they have lost in state courts (so far). The Texas Supreme Court, which is entirely Republican, refused to halt curbside voting in October when the GOP claimed it was illegal.

I want to clarify one point: While I said "curbside voting" in this thread, the better term is "drive-through voting." Though most of us may use these terms interchangeably, they're different procedures in Texas, and Republicans are specifically going after drive-through voting.

  • This crap can never happen again. After this election, there needs to be nationwide reform, clear rules in every state (including backup alternatives in case of computer failures or pandemics and the like). And they need to be solid…not THREE DAYS before a freaking election!

That would be priority one for me (well 1.5 after the pandemic): voting reform. This move is so blatant and wrong I’m just furious. My state is full of regressives and power hungry [expletive storm self-censored…gimme a minute]…

Texas needs to become blue, no matter what this year. Texas must be blue so maybe these… regressive people… will get a clue that we gotta join the 21st century and even after all their cheating, they still didn’t win.

I’m dreaming of a blue Texas this week and onward. They need to let every vote count, if every procedure has been followed and privacy and voter identification checking done right… then they votes need counting. This is b.s. all the way. And somebody needs to pound it into the Orange Goo(n)’s head that votes are counted for weeks after an election: the map just shows an estimated projection. Besides, don’t military absentee ballots take a few weeks to make it in after the date anyway, depending on the state? I’d LOVE to have someone explain that these folks fighting for our country won’t be able to have their votes counted because Dump wants this wrapped up on election night.

I’ll start my healthier diet after the election. Right now, I’m gonna make a german chocolate cake (haven’t done that in years) and do some angry prompt writing with some wine.

    • Hello Chatty Introvert. Well said. It seems that the regressive Republicans have given up on the idea of democracy. They want a one party rule like China and they are determined to be that party. In a democracy the people vote and those votes are counted. Democracies want people to vote. Many countries have a mandatory voting laws. In the US you have one party doing everything they can to restrict voting, they are not even pretending anymore. They just want white Christian males voting. Period. Preferably wealthy white Christian males. Even more preferable wealthy white cisgender straight married Christian males only voting. Like you I am tired of their bullshit, their regressive attitudes, and their bigotry. They are a minority that rules like a majority. Hugs

      • And their terrified that if the shoe was on the other foot, THEY’D be the ones REALLY discriminated against. Funny because if they didn’t pull this “might makes right” b.s. in the first place, they wouldn’t have to fear payback (not like it would happen anyway) for what they’ve done!
