Trump coronavirus adviser Scott Atlas urges Michigan to ‘rise up’ against new Covid-19 measures

White House coronavirus task force member Dr. Scott Atlas criticized Michigan’s new Covid-19 restrictions in a tweet shortly after they were announced Sunday evening, urging people to “rise up” against the new public health measures.

“The only way this stops is if people rise up,” Atlas said. “You get what you accept. #FreedomMatters #StepUp”
His message — which runs counter to the consensus of public health officials — is likely to fuel new tension between the White House and Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, whom federal and state officials announced last month was the target of an alleged domestic terrorism kidnapping plot.
Responding to Atlas’ tweet Sunday evening, Whitmer told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, “We know that the White House likes to single us out here in Michigan, me out in particular. I’m not going to be bullied into not following reputable scientists and medical professionals.”
Instead, Whitmer said, she consults “people that actually have studied and are well respected worldwide on these issues, not the — not the individual that is doing the President’s bidding on this one.”
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel echoed that message in a pair of tweets Sunday evening, casting Atlas’ posting as, “disappointing, irresponsible, and the reason why the United States finds itself in such desperate circumstances regarding COVID-19.”
“I look forward to a new federal administration that works cooperatively with our state government to protect Michigan residents,” Nessel, a Democrat, said.
“A patriot,” she continued, “is one who protects America from its enemies, both foreign and domestic.”
“COVID-19 is the enemy, not each other. Stop pitting Americans against each other and start supporting policies proven to effectively fight the virus.”
Whitmer announced in a news conference earlier Sunday that Michigan will begin a “three-week pause targeting indoor social gatherings and other group activities” to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.
“If everyone does their part, we will see a big benefit from it,” she told Blitzer of the new measures. “But we’ll be assessing it every step of the way.”
Throughout the pandemic, Whitmer has been the focus of extreme vitriol from far-right groups. The alleged scheme to kidnap her included plans to overthrow several state governments that the suspects “believe are violating the US Constitution,” according to a federal criminal complaint.
Still, she joins a slate of officials who are tightening their restrictions as coronavirus cases continue to soar.
The United States surpassed 11 million coronavirus cases on Sunday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The latest milestone comes just six days after the US recorded 10 million cases.
It was the fastest the US has added one million new cases since the pandemic began.
Unlike the government medical experts who advised Trump in the early months of the pandemic, Atlas has adopted a public stance on the virus much closer to the President’s — including decrying the idea that schools cannot reopen this fall as “hysteria” and pushing for the resumption of college sports.
“He’s working with us and will be working with us on the coronavirus,” Trump said in August. “And he has many great ideas. And he thinks what we’ve done is really good, and now we’ll take it to a new level.”

    • Hello Keith. Clearly I do not know Dr Atlas personally, but radiologist are not known as a thought tasking medical field. He clearly is out of his element and his medical field when he is talking about this virus and how it spreads in society. But as he is stressing the economy over peoples health I would say he is like some doctors I have met who are more concerned with their portfolios than patients health. Yes there are medical providers who care about getting rich, getting wealthy, racking up property far than making people healthy. Hugs

        • Hello Nan. I think you misunderstood my use of portfolio. In the ICU we had doctors that between visits to see patients would be on the phone trying to buy buildings or on the computers checking their stocks. One doctor was obnoxious bragging about how wealthy he was. He was from India and came here after the state paid for his education simply because here he could become wealthier. Some doctors only care about the money. The company of doctors
contracted to the ICU’s I worked for bragged about their twice a year one months vacations. One guy was a super catholic ( they all were catholic he was just more dogmatic ) and he bragged about going over and spending time at the Vatican with the Pope. The others talked in front of us workers about their month long safaris with their kids, and the other great things they were able to do for their kids and take their kids …
Needless to say I got real sick of some doctors really fast. But for a lot of them it is a money game. Hugs

          • What I meant is basically what you said … he wanted his “portfolio” to include being “Advisor to the President” — even though essentially it was no more “medical” than perhaps holding a stethoscope while he kissed Trump’s ass.

            • Hello Nan. Oh sorry, I was slow on the uptake. Yes he loves the limelight and the prestige of being the presidents advisor. Notice how quick he was to tell off and insult people much more qualified than him on the same taskforce. He is the little kid given a choice seat gloating to the others. Hugs

        • Hello Nan. Also there was the one doctor we had on a consult for a brain injury that told me taxes were to be paid only by people like me, people like him shouldn’t ever have to be expected to pay taxes. Open heart doctors were the worst at wanting to have their asses kissed. They hated to come to the ICU I worked in because we wouldn’t do it. In open heart the nurses would line up in front of the rooms and back when we had both charts and med books have them ready for the doctors inspections. They would come to our floor thinking we would treat them the same and we wouldn’t. They would get angry and storm off. But not all doctors were like that, most of them were just people, and really nice, helpful and really cared about the people they treated. Hugs

  • Only the best, Scottie. Only the best minions he can buy. Wherever he worked before taking the Sick-o-faint position with Trump, I suspect his job was slipping away.

    • Hello Nan. Went to get my flu shot this morning, before that I had to take the vacuum apart and fix it. Nope have not gotten to any blogs in three days. I will fire up the coal burning email machine in a bit and go see what is on other blogs. Thanks for the reminder. Was it on this topic? Hugs

        • Hello Nan. I am well past my bed time, which maybe why I can not find the blog nor my email notifications of it. Can you shoot me the link and I will look it over in the morning. Thanks. Hugs

            • Hello Nan. I seen that come over my desktop email notification and decided it was good advice. Especially as I stepped in to the living room to tell Ron what you said and Ron agreed with you. He said he was coming in to tell me the same thing. But there was a problem. I goofed up.

See I have been having trouble with bloating and pressure in my stomach / abdomen. I drink a lot of a non calorie, non caffeine, no sodium, but carbonated soda. I am always thirsty and drink a lot of liquid. Well now that I am having trouble even a small amount of the carbonated soda makes me sick and hurts. So we decided to try switching to Crystal Light juices. So I made up a gallon of a wild strawberry one that was very good. I drank nearly 2/3rds of it. When I couldn’t seem to wind down and get tired last night, We looked at the juice mix, and sure enough it was caffeinated. I was wired. I struggled to sleep after I went to bed. However great news, I did not have the bloating, and I did not wake up in pain. So far it seems to be a success. Lets hope it fixes the problem as it is getting harder to get the soda I like anyway. Hugs

              • Have you tried any of the “flavored” waters (e.g., Pellegrino)? Or even some of the flavored, decaffeinated teas? Or perhaps look for decaffeinated Crystal Light …

Glad you got some sleep, minus bloating!

                • Hello Nan. Until recently I had not thought to try alternatives, until it got so bad that three sodas gave me terrible pain. But we will keep looking into different things. Today the juice mix I made had no caffeine and I admit to taking an hour nap this morning. I am now waiting on my doctors appointment tomorrow to see where we go next. What I found remarkable I got your message and then the same thing from Ron right after. I can not get away with anything at this point, can I? 😀😉😉 Hugs

        • Hello Nan. I just read it. I wish I could say I was surprised or stunned but the truth is I am seeing this all the time. Those lucky not to get it think it is an over hyped nonsense and those that get a little mild case think nearly the same. Those who get really sick think that the real medicine to save them is being denied to them because reasons, and those people who know someone who died just think the person had too little faith in god / tRump. Maybe they were not really a true believer? I am soon off to bed, I am sad for his friend. As one person, I think it was Jerry noted, on CNN they have a nurse who is dealing with dying patients who still claim it is a hoax or they thought it was even as they are dying from it. The last emotions they feel is anger, not at themselves but at the rest of us. Hugs
