MINNESOTA: Appeals Court Rules Hate Group Can Sue To Overturn State LGBT Anti-Discrimination Protections

And the hate continues.  Why the flying fuck do people claiming to be “religious” hate so much?  I am so tired of them ruining my life, my rights, my country, and my ability to have life, liberty, and happiness.  Some how to them being denied the ability to discriminate and harm the LGBTQ in public businesses is stopping their right to worship their god?   What a hateful prick their god is.   These people started this business and never did a video just so they could challenge treating LGBTQ people fairly the same as they treat anyone else.   It is like we are having a whole new era of “Jim crow laws” aimed at the LGBTQ.   I wonder if my marriage will survive this take over of our secular government by religion.  Will we really be living in the fiction Handmaidens tale show?  I will post the link for those interested , it is a short post, but I just can’t deal with it today.   Hugs

Trump To SCOTUS: Legalize Firing People For Being Gay

Welcome to the dark ages again!  I guess I and people like me will be the next ones int he concentration camps with the brown people.  I wonder if I will have to wear a pink triangle?  Seriously this is the person the Log Cabin Republicans just endorsed?   This is the guy that just this week bragged about how great he was for the gays?  I am watching the rights we fought decades for disappear in three short years.  It hurts people, it really hurts.   Thanks to the religious people like Mike Pence and Mike Pompeo  who seem driven to make life worse for others not like them.  Hugs

Trump To SCOTUS: Legalize Firing People For Being Gay

Dominic Holden reports at Buzzfeed News:

The Trump administration took its hardest line yet to legalize anti-gay discrimination on Friday when it asked the Supreme Court to declare that federal law allows private companies to fire workers based only on their sexual orientation. An amicus brief filed by the DOJ weighs in on two cases involving gay workers and what is meant by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bans discrimination “because of sex.”

The administration argues courts nationwide should stop reading the civil rights law to protect gay, lesbian, and bisexual workers from bias because it was not originally intended to do so. That view conflicts with some lower court rulings that found targeting someone for their sexual orientation is an illegal form of both sex discrimination and sex stereotyping under Title VII.

How Trump’s Family Separation Traumatized Children

Filed under: Bigotry, Children, Criminal, Family, Fascism, Harm, Hate, News, Political, Questions, Race — Scottie @ 17:47

I do not know how much more I can take.  These reports are giving me nightmares, yet how much worse is it for the families and the children?  Today my heart is heavy and I have cried more than I want to admit.  I feel helpless to help.  I just read how when a surge of children came to our border with a real President in charge money was spent helping them.  Facilities were quickly set up and got help from the communities.  Children were treated like family, they had people speaking their language helping them, they had classes, communities set up astro turf soccer areas.  There were on site mobile medical teams and counselors to help the children and families.  That is what the wealthiest nation on earth, the one its people keep saying is #1, does.  Well did back then.  Today it is a different nation bankrupt of heart, empathy, and decency.   Today the nations leaders see worth only in terms of skin color and wealth.  To be brown, black , or poor is to be not human in the US today.  I am tired.  I do not understand why these avengers with assault weapons do not want to free the children but instead want to kill people who look like them.   If I had the power, the money, I would try to save all of them.   All I can do today is share the information, their stories in the hope it helps them.  Tired hugs

When Children at the Border Got Compassion The United States has a moral responsibility for unaccompanied children—and took it seriously, at least in 2014.

Filed under: Bigotry, Children, Criminal, Family, Fascism, Harm, Hate, News, Political, Questions, Race — Scottie @ 17:18

It was hard for any of us to understand the trauma the children had already experienced. But we knew that our role—our moral responsibility—was not merely to deal with them, but to care for them. And that is exactly what our country did.

We set up multiple facilities on military bases, and HHS worked with a coalition of organizations to shelter these vulnerable children while we looked for proper guardians. There was an outpouring of local community support, from church groups making food to a nearby school donating artificial turf for a soccer field.

There is a heck of a lot of good information at the link above.  Please go give it a look over.   It shows a huge difference in attitude from the Obama years and today.  Then these kids were not invaders, they were refugees to be handled with compassion and concern.  It makes me sick how far into fascism and racism this country has turned.   Hugs

Hate Group Leader Mat Staver Celebrates: Trump Has Already Fulfilled About 90% Of Our Anti-LGBT Wish List

Hate Group Leader Mat Staver Celebrates: Trump Has Already Fulfilled About 90% Of Our Anti-LGBT Wish List

The Associated Press reports:

When Donald Trump assumed the presidency, conservative religious leaders drew up “wish lists’ of steps they hoped he’d take to oppose abortion and rein in the LGBTQ-rights movement. With a flurry of recent actions, Trump’s administration is now winning their praise for aggressively fulfilling many of their goals.

Mat Staver, president of the legal advocacy organization Liberty Counsel, said Trump has fulfilled about 90% of the goals on a list that Staver and other conservative leaders compiled.

The Descent Into Cruelty

Is America becoming a crueler place? In the last two days, I’ve seen three disturbing news stories. First, Boston police “cleaned up” part of the city’s South End by hassling homeless people and destroying their possessions. This is not atypical police behavior, but the Boston PD achieved newsworthy levels of callousness after they apparently literally threw disabled people’s wheelchairs into a trash compactor. Here, read Boston magazine’s report:

“You could hear the metal crushing noise. It was really loud. They just tossed it in and crushed it,” says Cassie Hurd, a Boston homeless advocate who at the time had been observing the area. Hurd says about 15 BPD and state police cruisers, along with a DPW trash truck, rolled up to Mass. Ave. after dark and began telling the people congregating there to leave. Any unattended items were confiscated, she says, including at least three wheelchairs. “We spent a significant amount of time with someone who lost his wheelchair. He is not able to be mobile without it, and not having a home, nowhere to sit, nowhere to go, and was having pain. He couldn’t really balance or walk,” Hurd says. “He had left his wheelchair for a minute and his partner tried everything to keep the wheelchair. She pleaded with police and was sobbing and crying. They took it and threw it in the back of the truck and it was devastating to watch. There was nothing anyone could do to prevent them from throwing it out.” The man, who she identified as Jarrod, told her he had been injured in a hit-and-run car crash about a week earlier and had been prescribed the wheelchair by a doctor. His backpack had also been taken and trashed in the sweep, she says he told her.

Next story: The government deported a schizophrenic man from Detroit, sending him to live on the streets of Baghdad. Jimmy Aldaoud had never lived in Iraq, and didn’t speak Arabic. In a desperate video he posted online from Iraq, Jimmy said:

“They wouldn’t listen to me… They wouldn’t let me call my family. Nothing. They just said: You’re going to Iraq and your best bet is to cooperate with us. That way we’re not going to chain you up; we’ll put you on a commercial flight. I begged them. I said, ‘Please, I’ve never seen that country. I’ve never been there.’ However, they forced me. I’m here now… I don’t understand the language. I’ve been sleeping in the street… I’m diabetic. I can’t get insulin shots. I’ve been throwing up, sleeping in the streets, trying to find something to eat. I’ve got nothing over here.”

Aldaoud died in Baghdad, alone and miserable, apparently from lack of access to insulin. “He was literally crying every day,” said his sister.

Third and finally, ICE conducted a series of immigration raids at Mississippi food-processing plants and arrested about 680 people, the largest single-state immigration raid in U.S. history. Children came home from school to find their parents gone. An ICE official replied to criticism of this: “We are a law enforcement agency, not a social services agency.” Here is 11-year-old Magdalena Gomez Gregorio tearfully begging for her father’s release:

“Government please show some heart, let my parent be free with everybody else please… My dad didn’t do nothing. He’s not a criminal.”

If the U.S. prison system were a state, it would have a larger population than New Mexico. (A larger population than a lot of states, actually.) And yet we don’t think of “Prison” as one of the 50 states. There are lots of ways to ignore it or rationalize it. All those people probably deserve it. If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime.

Trump Administration Wanted to Block Undocumented Children From Attending Public School

Filed under: Bigotry, Children, Education, Fascism, Harm, Hate, News, Political, Questions, Race — Scottie @ 04:47

Stephen Miller, Trump’s senior adviser, wanted to block undocumented children from being able to attend public schools. In 1982, the Supreme Court ruled that it was illegal to block children from public schools based on their immigration status.

According to a new report in Bloomberg, Miller and other Trump officials had been working since 2017 to figure out a way around the Supreme Court ruling. The administration wanted to issue a guidance memo to the Education Department telling states they could refuse to allow undocumented children to attend public schools.

Though the Trump administration tried to keep undocumented kids out of public schools, officials were repeatedly told that their plans would run afoul of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Plyler v. Doe.

The Supreme Court ruled in 1982 that states could not prohibit people from enrolling in public schools based on immigration status. The ruling struck down a Texas state statute that denied funding for educating undocumented children. The statute also charged an annual fee of $1,000 for every undocumented child in public schools to compensate for the lost funding.

It’s not just Donald Trump. Immigration agencies and officials also use language of hate.

Filed under: Bigotry, Children, Criminal, Family, Fascism, Harm, Hate, News, Political, Questions, Race — Scottie @ 18:26

But you should know that Trump is not alone.

The racist, anti-immigrant words the shooter wrote can also be found on Border Patrol and union websites. I heard them when I was an agent, toward the end of my career, and I still hear them today. Last weekend, while speaking to an El Paso Border Patrol agent, I heard them again.

Many Border Patrol agents view immigrants as “invaders” and their jobs as agents are part of a “war” with migrants. Asylum seekers are “illegal aliens” and “prisoners.” This racist ideology partially explains why agents are not concerned when asylum seekers die in their custody. It is also why they are so willing to violate the Constitution and American asylum law.

The white nationalist plot to destroy America

Filed under: Bigotry, Criminal, Fascism, Harm, Hate, History, News, Political, Questions, Race — Scottie @ 05:55

Take the instance of white nationalist terrorism in El Paso over the weekend. The culprit — following in many footsteps before him — apparently wrote and posted online a screed which fulminated against a “Hispanic invasion of Texas” and the conspiracy theory that American whites are being deliberately replaced.

Both terrorists like him and his ideological fellow travelers who nominally disclaim political violence literally want to destroy the United States.

Air Force member called ‘distasteful for speaking Spanish in uniform

Filed under: Bigotry, Criminal, Fascism, Harm, Hate, News, Political, Questions, Race — Scottie @ 09:50

In a Facebook post that has been shared more than 50,000 times, Mercado, an Air Force airman, describes how she was accosted by a woman at outside a Starbucks in Hawaii, where Mercado is stationed, on July 17 who took offense to her speaking Spanish during a private phone call.

“You speaking another language that does not represent America and that uniform you are wearing, that’s distasteful,” Mercado described the unidentified woman as saying.

She wrote that she responded to the woman by saying, “I’m sorry ma’am the only distasteful thing here is that you are clueless to your discrimination, please educate your self. Have a nice day “

“I don’t know how you are allowed to wear that uniform,” the woman said, according to Mercado’s post.

There was the time she was told to “speak American” by a patron in a restaurant, and there was another time when a police officer questioned the authenticity of her driver’s license because it was from Puerto Rico (the island is a U.S. territory and people born there are U.S. citizens).

Recently, Latinos in the United States have faced a heightened level of threats and discrimination. Nearly 40 percent of Latinos surveyed in the U.S. reported being called offensive names, told to go back to their home country, criticized for speaking Spanish in public, or treated unfairly because of their background, according to a 2018 report by the Pew Research Center.
