It’s Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren v the ‘No We Can’t’ Democrats

Filed under: Economics, Education, Ideas, News, Political, Questions, Reason — Scottie @ 17:21

Delaney complained that the two progressive candidates were going to take away people’s health insurance and that ordinary people wouldn’t like that. Warren dismissed those concerns by pointing to how broken the current system is. She shared the story of a friend who, in the middle of battling a disease, was burdened by exorbitant medical bills and insurance-related paperwork – an experience that millions of Americans can relate to. And when an exasperated Delaney complained that his colleagues didn’t understand healthcare from a business perspective, Sanders told him that was the point: it shouldn’t be a business. That might have been difficult to hear for a congressman who has made money off the industry for years.

Sanders replied by reminding him that every credible poll has him beating Trump. He runs especially strongly in battleground states, where he can expose Trump as a “fraud” and a “phony”. What’s extremist about giving people a living wage, or having them pay less for prescription drugs?

Despite polling showing how popular the core progressive agenda of universal healthcare, jobs, and free education is, centrists are desperate to portray themselves as the only sane, electable option out there. This isn’t just the strategy of some long-shots in a crowded field – it’s the argument keeping Joe Biden at the top of Democratic polls.

But the electability bubble is in danger of bursting. Centrists used to run on lofty rhetoric: the “Yes, we can”, “hope and change” stuff. Now they’ve ceded that ground completely to Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

Right, wrong, and detail.

Filed under: Criminal, Economics, Family, Health, Ideas, News, Political, Questions, Race, Reason — Scottie @ 10:52

Recently I have put out information that in some ways was correct, in some ways wrong, and in all ways needing more detail.

On the criminality of crossing the border I said it was not a criminal but a civil misdemeanor.     I got that correct and wrong.  The people crossing the border for asylum are NOT breaking the law.   It is not a crime.  According to both international laws and US laws it is not a crime to cross a border to ask for asylum.  However it is a crime to cross the border for non-asylum reasons like looking for a better job.  That is a misdemeanor crime.   It has been dealt with in the past with an evaluation and if you were not a criminal you were given a date to appear for a hearing.   This is what tRump labeled catch and release.   It was the tRump admin that claimed everyone crossing the border had to be held.  They made a false claim that immigrants did not return for their hearings, but in fact they do.  Because all the adults were being held and kids detentions were governed by a court settlement the tRump administration came up with a cruel policy of child separation.   They were not even letting go of the children who had family here willing to come get them.   They also were making it harder for families with mixed immigration status to pick up the children.  The idea this administration has is that not one brown person should get to stay in the US, not one of them.   The idea that has been voiced by the administration is the more dehumanizing, the more cruel, the more despicable the conditions these people are held in the more of them will volunteer to be deported and the fewer will arrive.   That is false as I have explained.  These people for the most part are fleeing such horrors that they had no choice but come here and they can not go back to that no matter how badly they are treated here.

I misspoke also on the Medicare for All policy proposal.  I said there would be premiums.  I was wrong.  It will be entirely supported by taxes and will cost a lot less than we are paying as a country now.  The drug prices that are so high will be greatly reduced due to price negotiation that the republicans made against the law for the government to do even though every insurance company gets to do it.  The fact is most people will save money and get much better coverage than they do now.   The idea that people love their insurance coverage is not true.  People love that they have coverage, and people love their doctors.   People do not claim to love an insurance company that denies then needed coverage, that they have to fight with and jump through hoops to get care.  They do not love the high prices that are going up every year.  People do not love not being able to afford their medications.   When everything is covered by Medicare for All there will not only not be a need for private insurance, it would be defeating.   First if private insurance is allowed to cover the same things then healthy people would be paying twice for the same coverage.   Sick people wouldn’t be able to get insurance as happens today.   If there is some procedures that are not covered such as electives for cosmetic reasons or if a person wants a fancy experience like today’s more expensive concierge coverage that makes people feel more special than everyone else, then they can pay for that above the Medicare for all.  Understand there will be no need to have insurance.  You cannot be denied needed medical care or medications, you won’t need referrals, you wont need to worry about pre-existing conditions, you wont need to worry about changing jobs.   It will also be much cheaper.   Think of this, no country with universal healthcare is willing to give it up to go to an insurance based system like ours.   Why not?

Ok if you can think of anything else I may have misspoke or been wrong about, please let me know so I can check it out.  If I am wrong I will correct myself as unless you are a Republican cult of tRump member, who wants to be wrong?   Hugs
